“Shall another man pray for this, one that knew the goodness and benefit of it, and shall not I meditate upon it? And shall not I exercise my mind about it? Yes, surely, for it is my duty, it is my privilege and mercy so to do.  Let this therefore, when thou seest the spreading nature of thy sin be a memento to thee, to the end thou may’st not sink and die in thy soul.” -John Bunyan

This quote from John Bunyan’s book, All Loves Excelling is a reminder to me that there is only one thing standing between believers and the joy and peace that we so often long for.

It’s not our sin, for that has been taken care of.

It’s not our circumstances.

It’s the meditating and exercising of my mind in regards to the love of God.

Do you ever think there is no match for the sin you see in the world?

In the church?

In your own life?

There is hope. His grace covers our sin.

“This breadth that is in God, it also overmatches that spreading and overspreading rage of men, that is sometimes as if it would swallow up the whole church of God.” -Bunyan

“Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
that flutters over its young,
spreading out its wings, catching them,
bearing them on its pinions,” –Deuteronomy 32:11 ESV

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.” –Psalm 32:1 ESV

His grace is a widespread covering and is also a widespread enabler. It empowers us to turn away from all that entangles us in this life, toward Him, His grace, and His kingdom.  With His help and our cooperation, we can say no to sin and yes to Him.

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” -Philippians 2:12-13

His grace is a twofold antidote for the wasteland of sin.  It saves us and helps us.

Because He knows we are frail on our own.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him, For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.” –Psalm 103:12-14 ESV

Bunyan will show us and remind us over and over how immeasurable God’s grace and love really is.

How far is the east from the west?

“God will overmatch and go beyond you.” -Bunyan

Will you join me over the next few weeks as we explore and grasp more fully God’s love?  I agree with Bunyan that it is our privilege and duty to do so. My goal is to be prepared to face the trials and temptations of this life well.  Perhaps we might even flourish under them as John Bunyan did.

Next week I’ll continue with the length of God’s love.
