I don’t know the exact date we started but it was years ago now.

Calling each other on a Tuesday morning at 6:00 AM.   Talking each other up to look toward the Lord and the eternal each week.  Sometimes talking each other down off the cliff we feel like we’re standing at the edge of.

Most early Tuesday mornings hold priceless moments of wrestling with God for our families and life circumstances together with my friend, Suzanne.  These moments often feel holy.  Am I wrong to think that these sweet times together are times in which we are walking on holy ground?

Could our times together with other Christians and truly any time in which we interact with the Lord and others considered holy ground?  As we are walking in this wilderness…sojourners in a foreign land…like Moses…are we also walking on holy ground?  Not that all narrative in the bible is normative.  I get that what happened in the bible isn’t always happening to us too.

But my friend, Suzanne, and I are thinking this week about the burning bush.   How God met Moses in a foreign land and promised that He’d be with him as Moses would lead God’s people out of Egypt.

In his commentary, The Book of the Acts, F.F. Bruce writes in regards to that moment, “That one spot of Gentile territory was “holy ground” for the sole reason that God manifested himself to Moses there. No place on earth possesses an innate sanctity of its own.  In its Christian application this principle is expressed excellently in William Cowper’s lines:

‘Jesus, where’er thy people meet, There they behold thy mercy-seat, Where’er they seek thee, thou art found, And every place is hallowed ground.'”

Another Heidelberg Catechism question and answer…

Because isn’t Christ with us until the end of the world as he promised us?
“Christ is true human and true God.  In his human nature Christ is not now on earth; but in his divinity, majesty, grace, and Spirit he is never absent from us.

And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age'” (Matthew 28:18-20).

He is with us in this foreign land.  He is with us as we meet with others and remember His name.  He’s with us in our alone times.  And this week…we are thinking about how He is with us in those moments when we are with people who may not care to remember Him or who may not love Him.  When we’re with those who send us trials and persecute us. In those moments we would rather not endure.  Those moments too, perhaps, are moments of walking on holy ground.

She tells me of a time coming up that she doesn’t want to endure.  A time where she just knows she’ll endure heartache and testing.

Do you have a moment like that coming up?  Or maybe even a moment right now that you’re walking through?

What would that do for you to think of that moment as being a moment of walking on holy ground?

An intimate moment with Christ in you…a child of the light…standing against the darkness.  The two of you together.

The rescuer of the world with you to call others to the light.

“The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16-19).

For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness” (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

So these moments in which we are truly light in the darkness, take heart.  Behold, He is with us always to the end of the age.  Even when it feels like our flame is as a little match barely flickering being blown by the wind.

Those moments we dread may possibly be the most amazing holy moments that only the spiritual world can see as the true battle going on for souls.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
