We sat in her living room.

Through the wall of windows we see white cottony wisps of mist settle over rolling hills. Orange leaves burst through a sea of green.  Summer changes to fall. The end of a season happens right before us as we discuss the end of a season.  Blue-gray skies complement fall colors and some of our emotions.  Despite the fall colors coming through,  blue, green and gray outweigh and there is a feeling of crisp and cool out there.

But warmth and coffee are inside. My own mist rising up from the dark steamy liquid in a cup.  It’s rather cozy for the topic we discuss.

Both of us mourn death.  Death of life and death of life seasons.

I recall to mind that, “…you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14).

She tells me a verse.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.  For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,  as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

And she says something like this…something most of us have said or thought when we hear this verse.  “But this affliction isn’t light and it doesn’t feel momentary.  It’s huge, it’s heavy and it’s long.

A new thought came to us then.  What if the eternal weight of glory was to the same degree as these troubles?  Now that would be wonderful wouldn’t it?  As heavy as our burdens feel on earth, if eternal glory was to that same degree it would be worth waiting for.

But it’s not to the same degree.

IT IS BEYOND ALL COMPARISON.

So we take that in for a bit.  Comforted by the word, the mist and coffee.

For a moment I saw reality.  That these afflictions I see around me are transient like the mist outside.  They look heavy but in reality are light and transient like the mist. The eternal glory that I cannot see and looks too light at times—that glory is heavy, eternal and far outweighs the mist of troubles.

This is the lord’s gracious light and grace shining into some of the dark holes and crevices in my thinking this week. Where is He shining it on yours?
